£6m Newbury bill
The cost of security against protesters during clearance work at the Newbury bypass site in Berkshire will be £6m, the Highways Agency chief executive Lawrie Haynes disclosed. He said that when the clearance contract was awarded it was worth £1.684m. Most of the work is done but the contract is still in force and the final cost has yet to be determined.
